Vaidyaratnam P S Varier Museum was set up in 2002 in association with the centenary celebrations of Arya Vaidya Sala. The museum aims to showcase the relics of the glorious life and lifetime of the founder of Arya Vaidya Sala- Vaidyaratnam P S Varier. He laid the foundation for Arya Vaidya Sala in the early years of the 20th century on the Vijayadasami day of 1902 - for the preservation, promotion, and progress of the indigenous Ayurveda knowledge base in clinical, academic, and social domains that were essential during the period. It had turned a part of the renaissance movement of the then years.


Visitors’ time: 08.30 a.m. to 12.30 noon and 02.00 p.m. to 04.30 p.m. Sunday holiday



The museum depicts the social growth and development of Kerala as a whole, in addition to the milestone events in the life of P S Varier, most importantly, the onset and expansion of Arya Vaidya Sala as an organization with deep cultural roots. The viewers also get an idea of how beautifully the advancements of modern science and technology can be integrated with the traditional healthcare system.


The museum functions in a double-storied heritage mansion that reflects ancient architectural elegance. The heritage building itself is a show piece of Kerala style architecture in construction, in which the Arya Vaidya Chikitsasala (present Charitable Hospital) started in 1924. The ground floor of the museum explains the ancient education system, important social changes happened in Malabar region, etc. The rich collection of photographs, graphics, drawings, and write-ups exhibited here conveys the essence of the history of Arya Vaidya Sala and Ayurveda in general. The eight galleries within the museum display the academic and educational models of Ayurveda during the 18th and 19th centuries. Besides, the historical remnants of utensils for medicine manufacturing, potteries, wooden barrels, and planks for Ayurveda therapies, are arranged here for the visitors to have a comprehensive picture of the transition of Ayurveda from ethnic to enterprise.

The museum caters to the interests of people from all walks of life - researchers, Ayurveda students, practitioners, historians, university scholars, school-going children, and homemakers.
